Light colour and colour temperature, what is it?

Are you looking for lighting for your home or business? That can be a difficult task. There are many factors that determine whether lighting has the right atmosphere and look. Each room needs different lighting, because each room has a different function. For instance, you want to be able to relax in your living room, but you want to feel energetic when you are working in your office. The first thing to look at is the light colour, or colour temperature. What exactly this is and what effect it has on the ambiance we explain to you!

What is the difference?

Within the world of lighting, the terms light colour and colour temperature are widely used. But what is the difference between these two terms? Actually, they refer to the same characteristic of a lamp. Namely, it indicates how ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ the colour of your lighting is. You have probably noticed that some lamps colour more towards orange and others colour more towards blue. The warmer the lighting is, the more orange is reflected in it. The value used to indicate colour temperature/light colour is called ‘Kelvin’.

Kelvin

Kelvin thus refers to the ‘light colour’ or ‘colour temperature’. The higher the Kelvin value, the cooler the colour of lighting. And on the other hand, the lower the Kelvin number value, the warmer the colour of lighting is. For example, Kelvin count ranges from 2000K to 6000K.

Why is light colour important?

Light has a lot of effect on our emotions and on how we feel. For instance, light colour can contribute to a relaxed or energetic atmosphere. It is therefore important that the light colour matches the function of the room. Think of different lighting for workspaces or living spaces. A lower Kelvin value (lower than 2700) gives a warm and pleasant atmosphere. In contrast, a high Kelvin value boosts productivity and concentration.

Light colour and rooms

Choosing the right light colour for your space is not easy. The colour determines the emotion and thus lighting is highly dependent on your taste. In addition, it is also essential to match lighting to spaces. Thus, we make a division between living spaces and work spaces. Need help choosing the right lighting? Berla Lighting provides expert lighting advice.

Living spaces

By living spaces, you can think of the bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom. The focus here is often on a cosy look and a warm atmosphere. In short, you want to relax here. It is therefore recommended to use a lower colour temperature for this. Thus, a colour temperature between 2400K and 3000K is an ideal choice.

Do you want the perfect atmosphere for your home. Then you can also have a lighting plan drawn up for your home. A lighting plan will determine the perfect lighting based on your wishes. It takes into account placement, quantity and design.

Workspaces

It is important to feel energetic and active in a workspace. We therefore strongly recommend using lighting with a Kelvin value between 3000K and 4000K. Be careful not to go higher than 4000K. This is often perceived as unpleasant and can therefore also have a negative effect on concentration levels.

Does light colour change with dim lighting?

When choosing lighting, it is important to know whether you want to dim the light. It is thought that light colour always changes when lowering the intensity, but this depends on the type of lighting you use! For instance, regular bulbs differ from LED bulbs. But which kind is better?

Regular bulbs can change colour when you dim them. Think, for example, of a halogen or incandescent bulb. As you dim further, the colour temperature will also go down further. LED lighting, on the other hand, maintains its colour temperature at any strength. It is therefore a popular choice. At Berla Lighting, we only use LED bulbs.

Do you still want colour to change when you dim the lamps? Then there is also the option of using dim-to-warm.
