All about lighting and IP values in the bathroom

Are you renovating your bathroom? You'll be choosing products based on both function and style, but don't forget safety! As we all know, electricity and water are not friends. Therefore, the right lighting is not only a mood-setter but also essential for safety.

How do you ensure you choose the right lighting? Light fixtures can be classified into various IP ratings. In this blog post, we briefly explain what IP ratings are and how you can apply them in your (future) bathroom.

What exactly is an IP rating?

IP stands for Ingress Protection and indicates how well a lighting fixture is protected against dust and water. This international standard classifies the degree of protection of electrical equipment. When making a lighting plan for the bathroom These IP values are taken into account to ensure safe and suitable lighting is used.

The value consists of two digits:

1) The first digit indicates protection against solids.
2) The second digit indicates protection against moisture and water.

How do higher the number, how better Protection. Each zone requires a different IP rating to ensure safe and reliable lighting.

Why is light color important?

Light has a significant effect on our emotions and how we feel. Light color can contribute to a relaxed or energetic atmosphere. Therefore, it's important that the light color matches the function of the space. Consider different lighting for workspaces or living areas. A lower Kelvin value (below 2700) creates a warm and pleasant atmosphere. Conversely, a high Kelvin value boosts productivity and concentration.

What IP rating does my bathroom need?

The bathroom is a humid space, so it's essential to pay extra attention to the correct IP rating. To simplify things, we've divided the bathroom into four zones, each with its own required IP rating:

  • 0 Zone: This is the space in the bath or shower tray where lighting must have an IP rating of at least 67 to withstand immersion in water.
  • 1 ZoneThis is the space directly above the bath or shower. An IP rating of at least 65 is required for proper protection against moisture.
  • 2 ZoneThis zone extends up to 60 centimeters around the outside of zone 1. An IP rating of at least 44 is recommended here to provide protection against splash water.
  • 3 ZoneThis is the area outside of zone 2, where the risk of direct contact with water is lower. An IP rating of at least 21 is sufficient here.

What does this mean for other spaces?

Kitchen: It's also wise to consider the IP rating of your lighting in the kitchen, especially around the cooktop and sink. Cooking fumes and splashes can affect the lighting, so choose lighting with a higher IP rating.

Outdoor lighting: A high IP rating is important for outdoor lighting due to its exposure to weather conditions. Choose an IP rating of at least 65 to properly protect your lighting from the elements.
