Light color and color temperature, what is it?
Are you looking for lighting for your home or business premises? That can be a difficult task. Many factors determine whether lighting creates the right atmosphere and look. Each room requires different lighting because each serves a different purpose. For example, you want to relax in your living room, but you want to feel energized when working in your office. The first thing you should consider is the light color, or color temperature. We'll explain exactly what this is and how it affects the ambiance!
What is the difference?
Within the world of lighting, the terms light color and color temperature are frequently used. But what's the difference between these two terms? They actually refer to the same characteristic of a lamp: how "warm" or "cool" the color of your lighting is. You've probably noticed that some lamps have a more orange-like hue, while others have a more blue-like hue. The warmer the light, the more orange it appears. The value used to indicate color temperature/light color is called "Kelvin."
Kelvin
Kelvin refers to the "light color" or "color temperature." The higher the Kelvin value, the cooler the color of the light. Conversely, the lower the Kelvin value, the warmer the color of the light. The Kelvin value ranges from 2000K to 6000K.
Why is light color important?
Light has a significant effect on our emotions and how we feel. Light color can contribute to a relaxed or energetic atmosphere. Therefore, it's important that the light color matches the function of the space. Consider different lighting for workspaces or living areas. A lower Kelvin value (below 2700) creates a warm and pleasant atmosphere. Conversely, a high Kelvin value boosts productivity and concentration.
Light color and spaces
Choosing the right light color for your space isn't easy. Color defines emotion, so lighting is highly dependent on your taste. It's also essential to tailor the lighting to the spaces. For example, we divide the lighting into living areas and workspaces. Need help choosing the right lighting? Berla Lighting provides expert lighting advice.
Living spaces
Living spaces include the bedroom, living room, kitchen, and bathroom. The focus here is often on creating a cozy atmosphere and a warm ambiance. In short, you want to truly relax here. Therefore, it's recommended to use a lower color temperature. A color temperature between 2400K and 3000K is ideal.

Workspaces
It's important to feel energetic and active in your workspace. We therefore strongly recommend using lighting with a Kelvin value between 3000K and 4000K. However, be careful not to exceed 4000K, as this is often perceived as unpleasant and can therefore negatively impact your ability to concentrate.
Does light color change when dimming?
When choosing lighting, it's important to know if you want to dim the light. It's often thought that light color always changes when the intensity is lowered, but this depends on the type of lighting you use! Regular bulbs differ from LED bulbs, for example. But which type is better?
Regular light bulbs can change color when dimmed. Think of halogen or incandescent bulbs, for example. As you dim them, the color temperature will also decrease. LED lighting, on the other hand, maintains its color temperature at any brightness. That's why it's a popular choice. At Berla Lighting, we use only LED bulbs.
Do you still want the color to change when you dim the lights? Then there's also the option to use dim-to-warm.
